Sin City

Why does it have to be so long?!?

I could write a couple of pages to slag off this movie but instead I'll just say this one thing. It was insanely boring. I think that says just as much.

Cube

June 13th, 2005

It's been a while since I've done a movie review but this one's so unique that it's worth mentioning.

It's the kind of movie that I both love and hate, because it both challenges and frustrates me. In this case it's far more good than bad, because it's so engrossing. The premise is that 7 people get trapped somehow in a cube. A cube of square rooms, not knowing where they are in the cube or how they got there. Some of the rooms are trapped, going into them is imminent death. The people are all very different in background and personality, the flick has its share of psychological skirmish. But most perplexing is the configuration of the cube and how they are trying to get out of it. Along the way of course we find out something about each person and they all influence in each other in how they respond to the evolving situation.

I'm not a fan of gore stuff and there isn't that much of it in the movie (at least considering how much more there potentially could be) but that's the major downside for me. I'm also not satisfied by the ending, of course I rarely am even with stories less complicated than this one. But the story being told is fascinating and I can see it being one of those times where every viewer takes something unique out of it, because the backdrop is so abstract that you simply have to set your own reference points.

The most interesting movie I've seen in quite some time. It's a Canadian low budget production btw, which could explain why it is so interesting rather than something out of Hollywood.

iRobot

August 7th, 2004

iRobot I was fairly skeptical, I mean Men in Black and all I thought this was gonna be a forced sequel to that series. But it's not, in fact it's a decent movie. What surprised me the most was the story being interesting and it made pretty good sense, which is not something I can say for most movies seen these days. The idea of Sonny passing on the message is a good one. The world of robotics stands on its own to feet in this one, it actually makes me believe the story. What a refreshing change! Obviously, Will is still being Will  but it's less about him this time and more playing towards the story.

The movie also has a few other strong points. First of all, those cars were very cool, taking Audi TT to the max, I like that idea. Then the motorcycle racing was done well, the sound effects, closeups, very enjoyable. Then there's the fight scenes, which I think were done very well. Violence towards robots, that's quite an ingenious concept, it's a victim less crime. ;)

But no review would be complete without pointing out some apparent flaw. Isn't it a little curious how easily they found out that VIKI was the mastermind behind the revolution? I mean the whole building was built around computers but isn't it a little suspect that there's just one computer controlling everything? Wouldn't it make more sense to have various systems doing specialized things? I mean the whole one system controls everything is such a predictable conspiracy concept. Or is that supposed to be the beauty of it?

He got game

July 5th, 2004

He Got GameFinally got around to watching the flick last night and I'm rather disappointed. Denzel was decent but Ray Allen wasn't very convincing, he should stick to basketball. The story wasn't all that interesting either, few strong points. It's basically about a total basketball fanatic who wants his son to be the player he could never be. So he pushes him very hard from a young age and the kid ends up hating his father. In a heated argument one night, the father pushes his wife out of the way, she hits her head on the sink and dies. So the father goes to jail for 15 years and leaves the boy with his sister without even a roof over their heads. But they make it and the kid goes on to become the #1 prospect in the country. At this point the father returns and wants to patch things up, ultimately so that the kid will sign for a college that is friendly to the mayor so that his sentence can be cut short.
